– Jerry Cook, Owner of Master Hatters of Texas

Humble Beginings

Master Hatters of Texas, Inc. was established in 1968 by William C. Cook. Mr. Cook began his career with Byer-Rolnick Hat Company in Dallas, Texas in 1936. William Cook moved with Byer-Rolnick to Garland in 1939.

Learning From the Best

He started his career as a Hand Finisher on the product line. At the end of his career with Byer-Rolnick he had established himself as a Master Hatter.

Born of the industry

In 1968 William Cook began to manufacture on a contract basis with Resistol Hat Company. Over time he developed his own line of quality western hats, Master Hatters of Texas.

A New Era

In ’64, Jerry Cook began his journey at Resistol Hats in Garland, TX, a teenage start shaped by his upbringing near the factory. Despite earning a Business Management degree from Stephen F. Austin University, his heart remained with hats. Between coaching high school football, Jerry dedicated himself to Master Hatters of Texas, expanding its lineup significantly after his father’s passing in ’77.

Lasting Relationships

In 1977, his two sons took over to continue the legacy. In 1988 Master Hatters of Texas, Inc. began to develop hats for Wrangler Jean Company in a licensee agreement that was successful for 20 years. Today MHT is still making its own fine quality straw, wool, and fur felt hats in its 5.5 acre, 50,000 sq. ft location in Garland, Texas.

Looking into the Future

Now, in 2024, Master Hatters is cranking out 70 dozen hats a day, all thanks to Jerry’s hard work and expertise. His son, Matt Cook, has been learning the ropes for 16 years and is ready to lead the company into the future. With Matt taking over, Master Hatters of Texas is set to keep making quality hats for at least another 55 years, sticking to its roots in the country-western market.
